The government signed a contract with Miltiades Neophytou Ltd on Tuesday for the construction of the biggest road work of the year of total cost of €24.8 million. Despite the fiscal problems, the contract includes an economic incentive for the acceleration of the project and innovations for the strengthening of the road safety.

The project concerns the construction of the interchange next to new GSP and the third lane in Nicosia – Limassol highway of 1.7 km.

It also includes the construction of the road network east and west of the highway of 2.2 km.

In his statements, Transport Minister, Nicos Nicolaides said that the project will be completed in 28 months and before the undertaking of the EU rotating Presidency by Cyprus. “Therefore, for the first time we introduced the additional remuneration to the contractor, if the project is finalized earlier than scheduled”, he stated.

Public Works Manager, Alecos Michaelides, referred to the innovations for the protection of the citizens and their safe movement, such as the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), which will inform the citizens on the construction works and the cars’ velocity indication. Other characteristics are the special fencing for the protection of the public and the improvement and maintenance of the existing bridges.

“During the execution of the project, the drivers will be able to use 2+2 lanes”, he added

Constantiou Avenue

The government also signed a contract with Loizos Iordanou Constructions for the improvement works in Constantiou and Evripidou Avenue in Trachoni of €4 million. The works must be finalized in 58 weeks.

The project concerns the reconstruction of Constantiou and Evripidou Avenue and part of their side-streets. The reconstruction will concern 1.6 km.

The avenue will have two lanes and an additional lane for right turnings.
