Ayia Napa Mayor, Antonis Tsokoss passed away suddenly today at the age of 59 years.
In his statements, spokesman of the Police Department of Famagusta, Giorgos Economou said Antonis Tsokkos had breathing problems this morning and his family called a doctor and an ambulance, which arrived about 15 minutes later. However, the doctor found he was dead.
The body of Antonis Tsokkos was transferred to Larnaca General Hospital, where an autopsy will be carried out tomorrow morning to ascertain the exact cause of death.
At an extraordinary meeting, the Ayia Napa City Council expressed "deep sorrow and shock for the untimely and unexpected death of the Mayor and warm and sincere condolences to his family. The City Council decided to declare 40-day mourning and flags of all municipal buildings will fly at half mast. The town services will be closed for three days until the day of his funeral”.
Antonis Tsokkos was born in Ayia Napa in 1953 and studied accounting and shipping in London. On his return to Cyprus, he focused on the tourism industry. He was twice elected as Mayor of Ayia Napa, the second in 2011, concentrating 77.72%.
He was married to Emily Tsokkou and had two children, a daughter who lives in Austria and a son.
