Average employment in January – October up by 3.4% year on year

Total average government employment rose by an annual 3.4% for the period of January – October 2024, amounting to 54.128 persons.

According to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat), the annual increase is mainly attributed to the increase of the Educational Service casual staff, driven by the abolition of the purchase of services regime in the supporting programs of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth as from the school year 2023-2024.

In October 2024 total government employment reached 54,884 persons.

Employment in the Civil Service in October 2024 amounted to 12,045 permanent employees, 4,199 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 1,219 employees with contracts of definite duration and 5,883 hourly paid workers.

Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Civil Service with 51.6% and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage with 5.2%.

In the Educational Service there were 12,396 permanent employees, 996 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 4,150 employees with contracts of definite duration and 144 hourly paid workers.

Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Educational Service (70.1%) and hourly paid workers represented the lowest percentage (0.8%).

Employment in Security Forces amounted to 8,328 permanent employees, 4,479 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 294 employees with contracts of definite duration and 751 hourly paid workers.

Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in Security Forces with a share of 60.1% and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage with 2.1%.
