The decline in competitiveness of the Cyprus tourist industry, the ongoing delays in the construction of infrastructure projects in the sector of air transport, the reciprocal government’s measures in the private sector to stop the negative impacts on tourism and the rejection of the Annan Plan have alarmed the island’s tourist agents.

Green Line and competitiveness

At the Cyprus Tourist Agents Association (ACTA) Annual General Meeting, Chairman, Adamos Varnava said that the free movement of tourists to the occupied territories has hit competitiveness. “It is an imponderable factor that must be dealt with responsibility. The Cyprus tourism has future and prospects”, he noted.

Mr. Varnava also said that the Association favours the creation of infrastructure projects, such as marinas, casinos, golf courts, swimming pools of Olympic specifications etc.

Delays in airports

ACTA Chairman expressed his concerns, however, for the delay in the promotion of the ratified contract with the successful bidder with the BOT method and the ongoing problems in the airports until summer.

“Tourist agents suffer serious problems after the strengthening of the competition and the drop in fares and commissions received by the agencies”, Mr. Varnava said.

Tougher competition, Commerce Minister says

Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Giorgos Lillikas said that after Cyprus’ accession in the EU, the new dynamics and the uncertainty have affected the sector. “For this, there is a need to adopt the Strategic Plan for tourism. Competition has become tougher but the increased tourist arrivals are encouraging”, the Minister said.

The meeting was also addressed by Mr. Manthos Mavrommatis, on behalf of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI).
