Today is probably the most significant day of European enlargement, as the European Commission will proceed to Europe’s reunification. The Commission – fifty years after Europe’s division and thirteen years after the collapse of the Berlin Wall – will announce the 10 countries of Central –Eastern Europe and Mediterranean that will be ready to complete enlargement negotiations in December, and consequently, to proceed to accession in 2004.
Cyprus – after a twelve-year attempt - is one of the aforementioned countries and according to current indications, it will be positively evaluated by the European Commission. Foreign and Greek news agencies estimate that despite the island’s separation, the Commission’s report will suggest the completion of enlargement negotiations with the Republic of Cyprus.
On Wednesday evening the Commissioner Guenter Verheugen will hand to the European Council the Commission’s reports for the ten candidate countries. The leaders of the fifteen member- states, in turn, will discuss the reports during October 24-25 and will proceed to final decisions at the European Union’s summit in Copenhagen in December.
According to foreign news agencies, the Commission will not offer Turkey’s a date for opening accession negotiations, as there are great concerns over country’s human rights.
