The extension of the retirement age to the 63rd year for the teachers and the possible reduction of the student benefit is a casus belli for the students and pupils. Their demands have been backed by DISY, which urged the students today to protect the status quo.
In the morning, a representation of the organization against the extension of the retirement age protested outside the Parliament, demanding not to extend the retirement age of the teachers to the 63rd year otherwise unemployment will increase.
At the same time, they submitted a memo with their demands to the Chairman of House Education Committee, stressing that the extension of the retirement age will bring serious social impacts. They support that the employees will lose, the public schools will decay while youth will be severely hit.
Chairman of the Committee, Nicos Tornaritis added fuel to the fire, submitting the Finance Minister’s proposals to the students. The proposals were recommended to the President of the Republic for the consolidation of the public finances. “AKEL and DIKO recommend the extension of the retirement age to the 63rd year from the 60th”, he said.
“The second issue proposed by the Finance Minister is the ‘beheading’ of the student benefit. He proposed that the benefit should be targeted and each one of the new students to receive €1000. This is unacceptable. You must raise your voice and safeguard your sacred vested rights”, Mr. Tornaritis said.
This aroused strong feelings to AKEL MP, Yiannos Lamaris who told the students that “he should have apologized for not inviting you to express your views in Parliament”.
“DISY must say what it supports at last. Is it with you (students) or in favour of the privatization of all semi-governmental organizations”, he said.
“AKEL’s stance is clear. We do not believe that the extension of the retirement age will solve any of the problems”, he added.
Referring to the student benefit, he said that the government will not reduce it but will increase the benefits for the students.
DIKO MP, Athena Kyriakidou intervened too, stressing that the extension of the retirement age to the 63rd year is a measure concerning all social groups and not teachers only.
“It must be examined as a whole because it will solve the future problems of the students. Unemployment cannot be tackled via the extension of the retirement age only”, she said.
