EAC’s trade unions (EPOAPI – SEK, SEPAIK SIDIKEK – PEO, SIVAIK) will go on a 24-hour strike on Wednesday to protest against the Council of Ministers’ decision to proceed to the construction of a floating unit for the natural gas.

During the strike, EAC will operate with security personnel. The decision was taken during a meeting, which examined the situation after the Council of Ministers’ decision and the Labour Minister’s statements. Representatives of the employees expressed the hope that at the meeting to take place in the afternoon, the Board of Directors of the Authority will support the trade unions.

EAC Chairman, Charilaos Stavrakis told the CyBC Radio that there is a confusion with regard to the Council of Ministers’ decision and the Labour Ministry’s statements. He also revealed that he had a meeting with the trade unions last night, in an effort to improve the climate and to avoid possible strikes.

Labour Minister, Antonis Vasileiou stated that the Council of Ministers’ decision on the floating unit was clear and binding and will operate for five years. He also clarified that in a year the government will be able to evaluate the cost for the overland unit.

Government spokesman, Vasilis Palmas stated that there is no reason for the confusion, stressing that the decision was announced to the journalists by him last Wednesday.

The Council of Ministers’ decisions are public documents and the decision on natural gas will be publicized as soon as the ordinary procedures are finalized.
