One hundred-twenty-six state and civic officials from the public sector receive salary and pension at the same time, after the Supreme Court ruled as unconstitutional the non parallel payment of pensions and remuneration last October.
However, six affected officials voluntarily contribute their monthly pension to the Fund of the Republic and the independent body of social support.
According to a reply letter of Finance Minister Charis Georgiades to the Ecologists MP Giorgos Perdikis, the monthly gross cost of the pensions of the 126 officials who are concurrently receive salary and pension amounts to €154.244.
The 126 officials include 24 active ministers, MPs, commissioners, superintendents, the CB Governor, presidents and members of the public and educational service committee, five active mayors, former state employees, 26 active municipal councilors, 24 active mayors of communities and 9 active chairmen of School Boards.
They also include 11 other officials such as university professors, local staff in embassies, temporary and hourly-paid employees, the chairman and member of the commission of inquiry of complaints against police and 17 mayors of occupied villages who receive annual compensation of €25.121.
It is emphasized that the cost may be greater since the Treasury of the Republic does not possess data on the broader public sector.
According to the Finance Minister, on 52 cases of pensioners of the public service who had lodged complaints to the Supreme Court against the provision for the suspension of their pension, the state proceeded to a retroactive payment of their pensions.
The cost of retroactive pensions is calculated on the gross amount of €2.5 mn and - after all legal cutbacks - the 52 beneficiaries were paid the net amount of €1.7 mn.
To all other affected who did not lodge complaints, the payment of their monthly pension resumed from 7/10/2014.
Who renounced their pensions?
Based on a legal advice to officials holding positions and their pensions were hindered pursuant to the provisions of the Pension Law, such as the President of the Republic, the House Speaker, the active mayors, former officials of the Republic, the state must pay their pension from the date of the Supreme Court decision.
The monthly cost for the 10 affected officials has been calculated on the gross amount of €29.097.
