Cyprus is among the leading EU countries in the use of mobile phones, Commissioner for the Regulation of Electronic Communications and Postal Services of Cyprus stated on Wednesday.
According to the Regulator, the use of mobile phones in 2009 and today reached 135%.
According to Mr. Michaelides, “based on the population, our country has a high penetration in mobile telephony of 135%. This means that 135 mobile phones correspond to 100 Cypriots”.
Apart from the high use of mobile phones, the two mobile telephony providers offer quality services, he noted.
Indeed, Cyprus is among the countries with the cheapest duties.
On the other hand, the fixed telephony duties are among the highest in the EU.
However, Cyprus lags behind in broadband services and the Commerce Ministry is trying hard to form a strategic framework for their improvement.
Mr. Michaelides also referred to the market shares that the providers have in the fixed and mobile telephony as well as the broadband access.
According to the figures for 2009, Cyta holds 90% in fixed telephony and the other providers the remaining 10%, while in international telephony Cyta holds 60% and the other companies 40%.
In mobile telephony, the percentage is 80% for Cyta and 20% for the former Areeba (now MTN).
For the same year, Cyta has a market share of 79%-80% in broadband access.
