Thomas A. Kazakos, Director General of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) has been appointed Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping (“ICS) from April 1, 2025, the CSC has announced, noting that this is the first time a Cypriot is taking the helm of the ICS.
In a press release, the CSC said that Kazakos has been appointed Secretary General of the ICS from 1st April 2025, in replacement of Guy Platten, who is soon retiring.
It noted that Kazakos was selected amongst other internationally renowned candidates following a unanimous decision of the Board of Directors of the Organisation at a special meeting this morning “and constitutes a special honour for Cyprus Shipping and Cyprus in general, as this is the first time in the 100+ years of operation of the world’s foremost Shipping Association, that a Cypriot is taking the helm”.
It noted that ICS, based in London, is the global trade association for shipowners and operators, representing the world’s national shipowner associations with over 80% of the world merchant fleet, in a number of International Intergovernmental Organisations such as, the International Maritime Organization (“IMO”).
The Cyprus Shipping Chamber wishes Kazakos “every success in the big challenge he undertakes at such a critical period for International Shipping”, noting that it looks forward to working closely with him, in his new capacity and position, to resolve the large number of issues the Shipping Industry is facing.
