Increase of 16.2% for building permits in 2021

During the period January – December 2021, 8,164 building permits were issued by the municipal authorities and the district administration offices, compared to 7,023 in the corresponding period of the previous year, recording an increase of 16.2%.

The total value of these permits decreased by -7.8%, although the residential buildings value remained the same. The decrease was mainly noted in road constructions (41.9%), in non-residential buildings (32.9%) and in civil engineering projects (35%).

On the other hand, the total area increased by 3.8% and it is mainly due to the 8% increase in residential buildings’ area. The non-residential buildings and the civil engineering projects had a decrease in area (13.1% and 58.2% respectively).

The number of dwelling units recorded an increase of 13.1%. Specifically, the single units increased by 14.4% in 2021 and the residential apartment blocks by 17.9%.

During December 2021 the number of building permits authorized by the municipal authorities and the district administration offices stood at 778. The total value of these permits reached €241.1 million and the total area 224.8 thousand square metres. These building permits provide for the construction of 1,040 dwelling units.

Building permits constitute a leading indicator of future activity in the construction sector.
