Labour and Social Insurance Minister Zeta Emilianides on Monday briefed her EU counterparts on the schemes and actions the Cyprus government is launching in order to tackle youth unemployment.
Emilianides attended the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council (EPSCO) in Brussels, during which EU Ministers discussed, among other issues, youth employment, the Europe 2020 policy and preparations ahead of the European Council in March.
In her intervention the Minister said that it is of pivotal importance for EU member states to assess the social effects of the various reforms in order to pursue a plan that will better tackle the problems of unemployment and at the same time to reduce the negative consequences on the more vulnerable groups of the population. To this end, Emilianides pointed out that member states should make use of the various EU funds and projects that are tailored to face employment issues.
The Minister briefed her counterparts on government schemes on the issue and she noted that young people are involved in the launching of the projects and contribute to its assessment. Emilianides pointed out that it is of great importance for the various measures to be viable so that the young generations stay in the labor market and do not return to unemployment.
