DISY says ‘no’ to mobile telephony taxation

11/10/2004 13:48
Rightwing party DISY criticized strongly the government on Monday after announcing its intention to impose an increase in the duties of mobile telephony.

Speaking at a Press Conference, DISY Deputy Chairman, Averof Neophytou expressed his opposition on the taxation stressing that it will burden the possession and not the use of mobile phones, it will distort the mobile telephony market, it will create problems in the development of the competitive environment and it will have demands from the new mobile telephony company, given that the government proceeded to a public auction recently.

Mr. Neophytou reiterated DISY’s view for a privatization of the Telecommunications Authority and insisted that the government’s intention to impose tax on mobile telephony will hit the average citizen. “The increase in duties should be imposed through the proper procedures”, he said.

Mr. Neophytou said that the government anticipates revenues of £10 million from the increase in duties until 2005. “The increase in the duties of mobile telephony means that there will be an increase of £40 per annum for each subscriber”, he added.

Invited to comment on the report of the Investigation Committee on the CSE scandal, Mr. Neophytou said that DISY will express its view on the issue after the examination of the report. “It is impossible to read 1300 pages in 24 hours. People have lost their properties and the state must be rigorously fair”, he concluded.
