Employers’ and Industrialists’ Federation (OEB) expressed its raising concerns on Friday for the ongoing downward trend of the Cyprus industry in 2003, whose contribution in GDP dropped by two percentage points. OEB said that the exports of manufacturing products have dropped 12.4%, while the productivity and employment indices have declined 1.5% and 0.5% respectively.
The problems and the prospects of the industrial sector will be discussed at the OEB General Meeting to take place on May 18. The meeting will be attended by the Cyprus President, Tassos Papadopoulos.
According to OEB, the prospects of the Cyprus industry within the European Union are favourable. “With the island’s accession in the EU on May 1, 2004, a new era has started for the Cypriot industrialists”, OEB noted.
In its announcement, OEB outlined a number of governmental measures such as:
a) The state support of the industry with written memos and meetings with the Cyprus President, the House President, the party leaders and Ministries.
b) the promotion of the exports through the participation of OEB members in exhibitions abroad, promotion of new products, research of new markets and business cooperation agreements.
c) The cut of the power cost
d) The study on the Cyprus Industry to set the measures for its support.
