In the framework of the actions of Larnaka 2030, the organisation running for Larnaka’s candidacy for the European Capital of Culture 2030, "Μαντομαχαλάρτ", a cultural festival in the parish of Agios Ioannis of Larnaka, will take place on 11 and 12 October 2024. The festival is a continuation of "μαχαΛάrt", a programme introduced by Larnaka 2030 aiming to activate the neighbourhoods that are on the fringes of the city's artistic life. The aim of the programme is to promote co-creating and cultural democracy where art is seen as a public good and a common property of all people.
"Μαντομαχαλάρτ" is a neighbourhood festival in the historic parish of Agios Ioannis, this well-known and unknown territory in the heart of Larnaka. The programme is curated by the visual artist Antonis Tziarrides who grew up and is artistically and professionally active in this neighborhood. His family home, his workshop and his shop are located there.
The action seeks to highlight the importance of Mantomahallas for the human history of Larnaca, based on the hospitality, kindness and humanity of the inhabitants of Agios Ioannis. From the word “Mantomahalla” (Μαντομαχαλλάς) emerged “Mantomahallart” (Μαντομαχαλάρτ), which gives the stamp of the meeting of people with culture. A convention of art that opens the doors of the residents as in the old days, recalling the old neighborhood and the gathering of its people.
Personalities, images and incidents, memories of many years come back to the present day through different lens, becoming opportunities for artistic and cultural activities. The aim of the festival is to highlight the historic district of Agios Ioannis and its hidden beauty, which is inextricably linked to the constant presence of its residents and visitors, especially young people.
The festival offers a variety of events, including art exhibitions, open studios, graffiti, diverse music selections, street party, walking tour, theatrical performance, dining, street food etc. Seeking the direct involvement of the neighborhood residents, an exhibition of old photos and videos with narratives of the people of the area will be held.
The artists Ioanna Kasiki, Panayiotis Doukanaris, Evdokia Georgiou and Antonis Tziarrides participate in the festival. In addition, the festival will feature two sculptures by Costas Argyrou, the exhibition entitled "Κόκκινο· το ιερό το ανίερο" curated by Theocharis Karagiannis, and an exhibition of old photographs of the residents of the area. Twenty_three artist will implement a graffiti in the area entitled "Alasia Serene".
Also, during both days, from 18:30 to 20:30, the workshops of local artists will remain open to the visitors, including the workshops of Vassos Demetriou, Katerina Stavrou, Ariana Zakou, Stella Issa, Spyros Agathou and Antonis Tziarrides.
On Friday 11 October 2024, a walking theatrical performance will take place entitle "The road is mine" with Loukia Mousoulioti and written by Marina Vronti. The two performances will take place at 19:30 and 20:00.
The music elements featured during the festival are also rich. Μαντομαχαλάρτ will host DJ Barlic Gutter on Friday 11 October from 18:30 to 20:30 and Yaraman ft Irene Pelagia with a four-piece band from 20:30 to 23:30. On Saturday 12 October, people will enjoy music by Dr Cordoba from 19:30 to 21:30 and by DJ Astrochimp from 21:30 to 23:30.
Moreover, on Friday 11 October 2024 from 18:30 to 20:30, the short film "Kallikantzaroi 2024" by the Press and Information Office will be shown in a repeat screening.
On Saturday morning there will be an open café in the Renaissance Park (“Πάρκο Αναγέννησης”) from 10:00 to 12:30 and, at 11:30 in the morning of the same day, a guided walking tour of the neighbourhood will take place, unraveling stories and events of the past. The tour will be led by Dr. Iosif Hadjikyriakos.
