Cyprus’ cooperation with the US will be strengthened even more, Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides said on Friday, adding that on Saturday he will hold phone conversations with Republican senators.
Replying to press questions, on the sidelines of an Energy forum in Nicosia, about Turkey's reactions regarding the new State Secretary under Trump administration, Marco Rubio, the President said that he did not wish to comment, adding that "we are in contact with the new administration."
He went on to say that he recently had a telephone conversation with the former US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and on Saturday he has scheduled phone conversations with Republican senators who were recently in Cyprus, as part of the preparation and assumption of the duties by the new government in the US.
The President said that the new Secretary of State is known for his positions and that it was very important that he co-signed the relevant legislative proposal in the Congress on the Eastern Mediterranean.
He also said that the new State Secretary is well aware of the role of the Republic of Cyprus, the cooperation with all the countries in the region, and expressed certainty that the US-Cyprus cooperation will be strengthened even more.
