Shacolas asks for a casino permit

Chairman of Hermes Airport, Nicos Shacolas appealed to the government on Tuesday to allow the opening of a casino at the Larnaca Airport.

This request is included in the project that has been submitted to the government three years ago for the development of the old airport, which also includes a luxury hotel and a shopping centre.

It is worth noting that the government rejects the opening of a casino for social reasons.

Speaking during a press conference – the last as Chairman of Hermes Airport since Mr. Iacovos Iacovou is his successor as from today – Mr. Shacolas urged the government to allow the opening of a casino under control and only for the foreign tourists that visit Cyprus if this is deemed necessary.

“We are in deliberations with the government and the Finance Ministry for the project, including the casino, and I don’t see the reason why we shouldn’t secure a license for its opening”, Mr. Shacolas stressed.

The possibility of allowing Cypriot residents abroad or locals to enter the casino will be discussed at a later stage, if the government approves its opening, Mr. Shacolas said responding to the relevant question.

At the same time, he added that the project will include leisure, cultural and shopping centre as well as a luxury hotel of €200 million.

Responding to another question, he said that the procedures for the promotion of the project are at the stage of negotiations with the government for the expansion of the terms of the contract later than May 2031, when it expires for the management of the two airports.

He also expressed his optimism that the talks will conclude in a few days so that constructions start in the next few months.

The creation of a speed track is still among the plans of Hermes Airport, its Executive Manager, Alfred Van Der Meer stated.

“This will add benefits to Cyprus since we will be able to test our cars because, as far as I know, Cyprus has the highest percentage of big cars per capita such as Ferrari and Porsche”, he stressed.
