The continuation of Cyprus' growth path and the steady improvement of the economy in order to create conditions for full employment and prosperity are, among other things, the objectives of the government of President Nikos Christodoulides, who stresses that his top priority remains the effort for the resumption of negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus issue.
In an interview with "Phileleftheros" newspaper, - the first part of which was published in its Sunday edition - President Christodoulides unfolds his plans for 2025 and the objectives of the government's programme for changes to reach the citizens and address the problems of their daily lives. He makes the high cost of living a priority. He speaks of a plan for tax reform and strengthening the middle class, refers to a plan to repatriate Cypriot scientists, to attract foreign investments and notes that 2025 will be a year dedicated to the digital transformation of the country.
At the same time, President Christodoulides says that the priorities for 2025 will be announced on January 29, after a Council of Ministers meeting in Troodos on January 12 to prepare the proposals.
Asked about the priorities for 2025, President Christodoulides replies that "our priorities for 2025 are to ensure the continuation of our country's growth path and the steady improvement of our economy in order to create conditions for full employment and prosperity. To expand the international footprint of the Cyprus Republic, strengthen internal and external security and promote reforms and changes to improve the living standards of citizens and improve their daily lives."
"Certainly, the top priority remains the effort to resume negotiations for a Cyprus solution," he adds.
Among other things, President Christodoulides says that the government's proposals for the country's tax reform will be presented in early 2025. He explains that this is moving in the direction of strengthening the middle class and Cypriot businesses.
Referring to the investment sector, the President says that "in 2023 we had 3.5 billion euro of foreign direct investments which created 2.5 thousand high-paying jobs," noting that "we have reached the point where we are looking for labour to fill vacancies."
He continues that in this direction, "we are working on a plan to go abroad, with me in the lead, together with the 50 largest companies from Cyprus that need scientific personnel. We will visit countries where scientific personnel resides, young Cypriots, to try to bring them back to tackle this problem of lack of scientific personnel."
At the same time, he says he will travel to the US in April to attract new investments targeting the areas of shipping and technology. He also announces that in March there will be announcements from the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission on major investments that create new jobs.
In response to a question on the possibility of a government reshuffle, President Christodoulides clarifies that "there is no reshuffle".
