A significant reduction in fatal road collisions has been recorded from the beginning of the year until August 16, 2023 compared to the same period the previous two years, officer of the Communication Branch of the Police Headquarters, Eleni Constantinou, told CNA on Wednesday. She said that fatal traffic collisions this year were down by 38.5%, and deaths from such accidents by 39.3%, compared to the same period last year.

Constantinou said that from January 1, 2021 to August 16, 2021, there have been 22 fatal road collisions with 23 deaths throughout Cyprus.

From January 1, 2022 to August 16, 2022 there were 26 fatal road collisions with 28 deaths.

She added that, this year, however, was the best year compared to the previous two, since, from January 1 to August 16, 2023, there were 16 fatal road collisions with 17 deaths, 10 less than last year.

Asked about what led to the reduced percentage, Constantinou said that this was due to the intensified campaigns by the Police, together with other competent bodies to raise public awareness, so that drivers understand the seriousness of committing traffic violations, as well as for acquiring road safety awareness.

Constantinou also said that as part of their actions, the Police constantly identify, monitor and police, dangerous spots of the road network.

Referring to the installation and operation of speed cameras, she said that this contributed the most to the reduction of traffic violations.
