Finance Minister, Haris Georgiades sent a message of cautious optimism on Wednesday that through this prospect the risks may be avoided and Greece may move forward.
Speaking to reporters at the presidential palace, after the Cabinet’s meeting, the minister said; “I think the request submitted by the Greek government for a new support program is very important but it is also a move to the right direction”.
“We want to ensure the presence of Greece in the euro area, the hard core of the EU, we want to avoid serious risks and painful consequences that the Greek people already experience”, he added.
“We know that a state cannot be both without access to the international markets and without a support program because this would inevitably lead to an economic impasse and we believe that through a well-structured support program, which will not focus on taxes and charges but on reform and consolidation, a prospect can be created again for the country”, he said.
“We know that a very difficult situation exists now in Greece and for the Greek citizens. But I want today to send a message of cautious optimism that through this prospect we can avoid risks and the country can move forward”, he said.
“Cyprus, in this framework that summarizes the position that has always been expressed in relation to the problem of the Greek economy, will act in the Eurogroup and to the level of national procedures which should be followed, but also within the European Support Mechanism to which is also represented”, he concluded.
